1.29 Manufacturing Production & Quality Systems Part 1 Flashcards
(18 cards)
What factors can affect what scale of production is used?
The type of production system can depend on cost, materials, manufacturing techniques and labour skill/intensity.
Describe continuous production. Provide an example of a product made using this process.
A constantly highly automated manufacturing process (sometimes 24h/day) that has a high set up and running costs but the economies of scale balance it out. This is used to make everyday products that are needed in vast amounts and will need manufacturing even after a year of 2.
Screws or Bottle Caps
Describe Mass Production. Provide an example of a product made using this process.
A long production line where machines and workers are layed out in order of production steps. This is used with semi-automated or fully-automated processes to create 1000s of a product in a set time.
Used in making laptops, washing machines & IKEA Furniture.
Describe Batch Production. Provide an example of a product made using this process.
Batch production is used when you need to make less things than mass production (100-1000 products) and aren’t all the same. This means they are less automated and require more skilled personnel.
Laptops but they have different coloured shells.
Identical hats, but they feature a different logo/stamp.
Describe One-Off Production. Provide an example of a product made using this process.
High skill labour used to typically make unique products. This is very expensive, time consuming and labour intensive. No automation and done mainly by hand/hand tools.
Unique furniture, Body specific gear (mouth guards)
What is Cell Production?
Dividing the process of manufacturing into different task, with each having multiple jobs within them. These tasks can be cycled between teams, giving all employees a chance to better their skills on each job and keeps them motivated/not bored.
What is the main purpose of Flexible Manufacturing Systems?
To allow production methods to adapt and fit into the constantly evolving and changing technologies and meet customer demands quickly and efficiently.
How cna you have flexibility in the manufacturing processes?
Quick change of tools in machines that won’t disrupt workflow.
Changing components or parts of a machine to update a product or make a new model.
Ability to increase/decrease product output or improve the production system.
What is a negative and positive of Flexible Manufacturing Systems?
Very high set up cost
Due to high automation, quality of products are typically high.
Explain Just In Time Manufacture and its purpose.
To make products fast, respond to consumer feedback quickly while keeping costs on storing materials low.
This is done by ordering parts/materials needed for manufacture for the day or day before they will be needed to eliminate the need to store the materials and with customers feedback rapidly changing they can immediately make, changes ot materials or other things.
What is most important thing for Just In Time manufacture?
A good ICT System that keeps track of all orders, equipment, stock of materials and what stage of production they are at.
What is the purpose of Quick Response Manufacturing?
Reduce lead times throughout the manufacturing process to improve flexibility, quality, and responsiveness.
What are the 4 key aspects of Quick Response Manufacturing?
Time is the most important performance measure.
Uses small, cross-functional teams.
Reduces batch sizes.
Focuses on overall system performance.
What is concurrent Engineering?
Designing and developing all aspects of design and production at the same time, to save on time.
What is an important tool for Concurrent Engineering and why?
CAD is very useful as files can be easily shared and it is easy to communicate between teams.
What is the purpose of Kanban?
Reduce amount of work in progress reducing the floor space to store stock and inventory.
What benefits does Kanban bring?
Reduces bottlenecks in ht e production flow/process.
What needs to be guaranteed first for Kanban to move to the next stage?
The next team needs to be all ready and the current team needs to be all complete for the tasks to progress to the next step.
