A collective identity

What is a collective identity ?
A team can be recognised easily as they’re wearing the same uniform
This develops affiliation which creates motivation and belonging
What is interaction ?
The way players work together to complete a task
What are the different communication ?
Non verbal and verbal
Coded plays
What is the purpose of having a shared goal ?
Achieving a shared goal / target helps to bind people together so they commit to each other and work hard to achieve the goals, this raises motivation
What is the forming section of the Tuckman’s model?
- Getting to know each other, strengths / weaknesses, will people fit in
- Develop social relationships
- Reliant on the coach to bring the group together
- figure out the goal
What is the storming section of the tuckman’s model ?
- Infighting and conflict as people establish roles / positions
- Confrontation with leaders
What is the Norming section of the tuckman’s model ?
- Cooperation, conflicts are resolved
- The team begins to unify and cooperate focusing on achieving goals
- Standards / norms are accepted and the cohesion of the team develops
- Motivation and success rises
What is the performing section of the tuckman’s model ?
- Common goals, team supports each other and understand their roles
- motivation and enjoyment is high
- Respect for other members and leaders is high
How long does group dynamics take ?
- Time taken in each stage changes - settled teams accept new players quickly while representative teams take longer to settle
- Wether this process occurs at all is down to the cohesion of the group e.g. the England football team doesn’t seem to bind so underperforms
What order does the tuckman’s model go in ?
Forming, storming, norming, performing
