ECGs Flashcards
What do ECGs do?
Measure the spread of electrical activity through the heart
How do ECGs Work?
Electrodes are placed on a persons skin - chest and limbs
detects changes in polarisation in the heart by measuring the current at skin surface
What is happening at the P wave?
Atrial systole
Depolarisation of the sino atrial node
What is happening at the QRS complex?
Ventricular systole
Depolarisation of the atrioventricular node
What is happening at the T wave?
Diastole
Why is the QRS complex the biggest wave?
Ventricles have the largest muscle mass.
What is cardiac output?
The volume of blood pumped out by a ventricle in 1 minute
What is stroke volume?
The volume of blood ejected by a ventricle in a singular contraction
Normal heart rhythm
60-100bpm
Bradycardia heart rhythm
less than 60bpm
Tachycardia heart rhythm
more than 100bpm
What is atrial fibrillation?
Abnormal rhythm from atria causing the ventricles to lose regular rhythm
What is an Ectopic heart beat?
Extra heartbeat after the normal rhythm, followed by longer than normal gap
