meph is presented as obedient, as he follows orders from the entitled Faustus who acts as if he already has omnipotent power. furthermore he is so blinded by his overwhelming desires he’s overlooking mephs manipulation and machevillion

the antithesis is emphatic of Faustus foolishness and ignorance, which is perhaps intentional to justify his gluttonous desire that he is blinded by. Faustus should have this knowledge as he is an expert in divinity
