Powhatan Indians

A

Thousands of the Powhatan Indians lived in the area where the Jamestown settlers landed.At first they helped the colonist, but then,angry at how they were treated, they stopped supplying food to the settlers. This caused the “Starving Time”over one winter.

Pocahontas

A

Pocahontas was the daughter of the most powerful Powhatan chief. She married John Rolfe. This helped improve relations between the Powhatan Indians and the colonist.

Economy

A

People came to Jamestown to find riches like gold and silver. There was none. But the settlers finally found a way to make money. Many of them began growing a crop called “tobacco”, which was vey popular in England. They could sell it for money.

The pilgrims

A

This was a group of separatists who had been persecuted so badly in England that they decided to move to American. They sailed on the mayflower and ended up dropping anchor in cape pod. They went ashore at a place called Plymouth .

The mayflower compact

A

This was a document that all the pilgrims signed before they left the ship. It set up an organized, orderly Government. Each person promise to obey the laws passed “ for the general good of the colony”.
