1.3 Metal Part 1 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are the 3 main ways that metals are manufactured and sold (not the shape)
Solid sections (completely filled)
Tube (hollow)
Sheet
What are the main 4 types of metal sections/tubes?
Round
Hexagonal
Square
L-Section
What is the purpose of metal beams?
To span large distances such as between to walls and offer support between that area.
What are the 4 types of metal beams?
I-Section
L-Section
T-Section
U-Section
What makes a metal ferrous?
It contains iron so it can rust and sometimes be magnetic
What is the process of turning ore into usable metal?
Washing
Grading
Crushing
What step is required for the productions of iron and for what purpose is it done?
It’s put into a blast furnace to get pig iron.
What are non-ferrous metals and what are some of their main identifying properties?
Metals that don’t contain iron.
They aren’t magnetic and don’t rust, but they do tarnish but this can be cleaned off
What is the most plentiful metal in the earths crust and why is it so useful?
Aluminium
It has a high strength to weight ratio and it is great for recycling.
All of the aluminium we currently use has been previously recycled
What are alloy metals and what is their purpose?
A mixture of 2 or more metals/2 or more elements in order to create new metals with stronger and better properties and characteristics.
Name 2 ferrous alloys
Stainless steel (steel and chromium)
High speed steel (steel and tungsten)
Name 2 non-ferrous alloys
Brass (Zinc & Copper)
Duralumin (aluminium and copper)
