Fuel enough to fly to the destination, execute an approach and a missed approach. Then to fly for an additional 45 min for a prop plane and an additional 30 min for a turbo jet.
What is the definition of Reserve Fuel?
Reserve Fuel is EXTRA fuel carried for the unforeseeable - what cannot be planned for. We are not suposed to touch reserve fuel on a flight
What is the definition of Contigency Fuel?
Fuel carried for the foreseeable things we can plan for:
- Weather (to go around or divert)
- Traffic (high traffic, holds)
- Extra Taxiiing (large airports, holding short, waiting, etc)
- Unfamiliar with area
- Flying around a body of water when no floatation devices are carried
- Etc
Fuel things to remember for the exam…
- If given, add Contigency Fuel to the total fuel
- Required fuel on any exam will include: Climb, Cruise, and Reserve
- If given, include taxi fuel in the Required Fuel
- Used Fuel is what is burned off during the flight or a portion of the flight: Taxi, climb, cruise tend to be what the exam will ask you to calculate
The type of plane is very important on the exam when it comes to fuel requirement questions. What do turbine powered aircraft (turbo-prop, turbo-fan, and turbo-jet) use as fuel and what does it weigh?
