Properties of matter and changes in form Flashcards
How is a physical property different from a chemical property?
A physical property can be observed with our senses while a chemical property can only be determined by changing a substances identity.
What is the difference between an intensive and extensive property? Give an example of each.
Intensive properties do not depend on the amount of matter present e.g Density. Extensive properties depend on the amount of matter being being measured e.g. Mass.
What is a physical change?
Any alteration to the size, shape, or state of a substance.
What is a chemical change?
Any alteration to the molecular makeup of a substance.
What is an Exothermic reaction?
A physical or chemical reaction that releases heat and energy e.g. making Ice Cubes
What is a Endothermic Reaction?
A physical or chemical reaction that absorbs heat and/or energy e.g. boiling water, melting ice cubes.
What is Matter?
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
What is mass?
How much matter is in a object.
