Preparation of dry soluble salts Flashcards

1
Q

Explain the process of creating a soluble salt

A
  1. Add a specific volume of acid (e.g sulfuric acid) into a beaker and heat it gently on a bunsen burner for about 1 minute.
  2. Take the beaker of the bunsen burner and add your insoluble reagent (e.g copper oxide/carbonate) to the solution and mix with a glass rod.
  3. Add the reactant to the solution in excess to be certain that all the acid has been completely neutralized by the base, alkali, or insoluble reagent.
  4. Then you filter the excess insoluble reagent out using a funnel and filter paper to leave you with a pure soluble salt solution.
  5. Using crystallization, heat up the solution using a water bath, which should evaporate the water and concentrate the solution
  6. Take it off the heat and leave the solution to cool and form pure dry salt crystals
