- Italy had been defeated by Abyssinia in 1896 and wanted revenge
- it would boost Mussolini’s popularity by distracting people from the depression
- Mussolini wanted to make Italy great again

A
- imposed economic sanctions but delayed banning oil exports incase the USA didn’t support them
- didn’t close the Suez Canal so supplies got through despite sanctions
- by May 1936, Italy conquered Abyssinia

A
They were saving their resources as Hitler seemed a bigger threat

What was the Hoare-Laval Pact?
A
December 1935 - Britain and France’s foreign ministers agreed that Italy would be given half of Abyssinia. Details of the pact were leaked to the press. Proved that they were willing to undermine the league for their own self interest
