What is balance?

A

Refers to the dancer’s ability to maintain the body in a perfect equilibrium through awareness of their body. Balance can be in a static position but also can be seen in dynamic movement. It can be performed using different body parts such as balancing on hands or one hand, hip, etc.

What is flexibility?

A

Flexibility is the ability to bend, extend and stretch easily without pulling a muscle. Flexibility occurs in muscles, ligaments and joints.

What is alignment?

A

The static and dynamic relationship of the skeleton to the line of gravity and base of support.
Alignment is the relationship of body parts to each other.

What is coordination?

A

The timing and smoothness of the movements executed. You may be doing one thing with one body part and simultaneously doing something different with other body parts.

What is control?

A

It is your ability to sustain muscular control when holding a position in stillness, to slowly moving through from one shape to another. It is being very clear about exactly what your body is doing at every movement of your dance.

What is transference of weight?

A

Refers to moving from one body position to another. This can be walking, leaping, running or rolling - wherever weight is transferred from one body part to another.

What is stamina?

A

Stamina refers to your physical fitness and the ability to sustain exercise for prolonged periods of time.

What is strength?

A

Strength is shown when sustaining movements such as holding a challenging balance, or performing movements which need to engage strength through the various muscles.

For example: a handstand or inversion

Strength refers to the power which a dancer uses to execute movement.
