LAB 5 ENZYMES pg.77 Flashcards

1
Q

What are enzymes?

A

Proteins and sometimes nucleic acids that increase the rate of specific chemical reactions by acting as catalysts that lower activation energies.

Q

Why are enzymes essential to life?

A

Because most metabolic reactions would not take place at all without them

Q

How is Amylose digested?

A

Amylase chews off the glucose molecules from the end of the amylose, by breaking the glycoside bonds at the end of the polysaccharide.

Q

If amylose and amylase are left together in solution in a test tube for an extended period of time, what will be left in the test tube at the end?

A

Amylase and glucose will be left at the end.

Q

How does temperature affect the rate of reaction?

A

-Higher temperature = faster reaction because more energy/speed for collisions

-Lower temperature = slower reaction because less energy/speed for collisions

Q

What are competitive inhibitors?

A

Molecules that bind to the active site of an enzyme and inhibit the ability of the substrate to bind.

Q

What are non-competitive inhibitors?

A

Non-competitive inhibitors bind at a location other than the active site (allosteric site) , which results in a change of shape in the enzyme so that the enzyme cannot bind to the substrate.
