Q

Inhaling…

A

inhaling means breathing in – it is when air enters the lungs.

Inhaling happens when:
· The intercostal muscles between the ribs contract expanding the rib cage.
· The diaphragm contracts (pulls down).
· The lung volume increases, so the pressure inside the lungs decreases. This causes air to enter the lungs.

Q

Exhaling…

A

exhaling means breathing out – it is when air leaves the lungs.

Exhaling happens when:
· The intercostal muscles between the ribs relax.
· The diaphragm relaxes (moves up).
· The lung volume decreases, so the pressure inside the lungs increases. This causes air to leave the lungs.

Q

Difference between breathing and respiration…

A

breathing is the mechanical process of taking fresh air into the lungs and removing carbon dioxide from the lungs.

while…

respiration is the chemical process which takes place in every cell to release energy from the simple sugars (e.g. glucose) by reacting the glucose with oxygen.
