Emotions
responses to the environment or situations
Primary emotions
present in early life and nonhuman animals, universal
- main ones: joy, anger, disgust, surprise, sadness, fear
- thought to be universal and innate
Self-conscious emotions
relate to ones sense of self, emerge around 1.5 - 2 years
(guilt, shame pride, jealousy)
Emotion regulation
- newborns almost totally reliant on others to soothe their emotions
- individual difference in emotion regulation
- difficulty regulating negative emotions increase risk for difficult relationships with others, lower executive functioning, and difficulty in school
Emotion coaching
assisting children in emotion coping, caregivers can be in-tune with children’s emotional states and talk bout emotions/experiences
- more positive emotional, behavioral, and social outcomes
Emotion dismissing
attempts to minimize negative emotions, caregivers may deny, dismiss, or try to change negative emotions
Adolescent emotions
amygdala matures before prefrontal cortex
Adulthood/aging emotions
- with increasing age, emotions tend to mellow and people are more positive
-adults focus more on fulfilling emotional needs and less on acquiring knowledge
Socioemotional selectivity theory
with increasing age, adults maximize positive emotions by being more selective in their relationships and activities
