2.5 Ultrastructure of plant cells Flashcards

1
Q

Cellulose cell wall

A

plant walls are freely permeable= substances can pass into and out of a cell through the wall

–> contents of the cell press against the wall, making it rigid

Q

What is a Vacuole?

A

membrane lined sacs in cytoplasm containing cell sap
–> membrane is known as a tonoplast (selectively permeable)

Q

What are chloroplasts

A

organelles responsible for photosynthesis (found in green parts of plants but never in roots
–> granum contain chlorophyll pigments (where light-dependent reactions occur during photosynthesis)
–> chloroplasts contain DNA (cpDNA) and ribosomes (can perform protein synthesis)

Q

Structure inside of a chloroplast?

A

–> double membrane structure with a fluid enclosed in the chloroplast called stroma
–> contains an internal network of membranes forming flattened sacs called thylakoids
–> several thylakoids stacked together are called granum (pl. grana) & grana are joined together by lamelle
