formed in 1859 by joining several political groups in parliament, consisted of four groups- The Whigs, Liberals, Radicals and Peelites, had different views but by 1859 were pursuing increasingly similar aims. the liberals dominated from 1847-65 but due to the fact they were a fragmented group, theybuild ormajority
the whigs
largest group in the liberal party ranks, aristocratic, believed in constitutional monarchy, reform to conserve, some junior Whigs began to call themselves Liberals, clashed with the Radicals over the pace of reform
The liberals
many came from middle-class businessmen or commercial backgrounds or from lawyers, believed in the liberty of freedom, free trade, freedom of the press, and religious freedom, many were nonconformists and believed the church should be separated from the state
the peelites
split up from the Conservative party due to the repeal of the corn laws as followers of Robert peele, believed in free trade, came from industrial or business backgrounds, numbers were declining by 1859 so they were content to fuse with the Liberals, Gladstone was a leading peelite
the Radicals
free thinking middle-class men, believed in utilitarianism, supported further parliamentary reform, free trade and removal of government restriction, disliked aristocratic government and the privileged position of the church England, John bright was an influential radical
