types of experiments Flashcards

1
Q

laboratory experiments

A

experiment conducted under highly controlled conditions
- standardised procedure, experimenters have more control over variables
- results cannot be generalised

Q

quasi experiments

A

similar to natural experiments as researchers do not have control over the independent variable
- researchers cannot ethically manipulate the independent variable in the question
- good for real world settings as you can choose your groups

Q

natural experiments

A

conducted in the everyday environment of the ppts, the experimenter has no control over the independent variable
- arises when comparable individuals or groups of people are sorted by ‘nature’

Q

field experiments

A
  • conducted outside of the laboratory in a ‘real world’ setting
  • participants are exposed to one or two or more levels of an independent variable and observed for their reactions
  • can see behaviour in action in realistic settings
  • makes it more difficult for researchers to control the variables

Q

Bobo doll experiment - Albert Bandura

A
  • subjects exposed to aggressive models would reproduce aggressive acts resembling those of their model
  • boys are more aggressive than girls when presented with the model
  • laboratory experiment - controlled conditions
