Genesis 1 v. 2 Flashcards

Q

Parallels to Other Near Eastern Myths

A

Genesis has parallels to other near eastern myths. God is creating the world out of the cosmos and metadivine. God breaths to give lift to Adam like the 4 winds of the old myths. Marduk used this wind to kill the Mother God by keeping her mouth open before he shot her with an arrow. Adam and Eve are also helpers. Marduk created helpers to appease the gods of that myth.

Q

Source Theory

A

Genesis 1 is written in more of a repetitive and poetic manner. God is refered to as “God” which is associated with the Elohist of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

Genesis 2 is written with prose (oridnary language) and imagery. God is refered to as “Lord” which is associated with the Yahwist of the Southern Kingdom of Israel.

My comparison

A

gen 1. v. 2

both
God created heaven and earth. it was formless and and empty. darkness and water and wind (often translated as the Spirit)
2- explains more by saying there were streams causing water to be there.
1- explains how and when each thing was made and on what day. God spoke things into existence.
2- Does not go through each day. seems to be an expansion on 1. No talk of making light or land, jumps right into making Adam. making trees gardens and naming rivers.

1- Man and woman created at one. In 2 the story of Adam being put to sleep
2- more explanatory and less poetic. for example– that is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife and they become one flesh. look to explain things deeper.

2- they were naked and had no shame. Sets you up for the fall of man, Genesis one does not premise the story to come.
