ZIMBARDO - Aim
to investigate if people would conform to the roles of guard and prisoner in a role-playing exercise that stimulated prison life. Zimbardo was interested in finding out whether the brutality reported among young guards in American prisons was due to sadistic personalities of guards or to do with the prison environment
ZIMBARDO - Procedure
Used a lab experimen. converted basement of Stanford University psychology building into a mock prison.
Advertised students to play the roles for a fortnite. 21 males were screened and paid £15 a day
randomly assigned roles.
What happened to the prisoners
Arrested in own home, taken to police station, fingerprinted and booked. blindfolded. deindividuation process began. had same smock and labelled number
what happened to the guards
Guards issued khaki uniform, whistles, handcuffs, dark glasses to make eye contact impossible. no violence permitted.
ZIMBARDO - Findings
within hours some guards began harrassing prisoners tormented them. prisoners became submissive. One prisoner had to be released after 36 hours, after uncontrollable screaming and anger.
3 others had to leave within days. closed on the 6th day and had to be called back for a follow up check.
