A

Help patient recognise problematic situations and triggers, and to either avoid or learn how to deal with problematic behavior in these situations. Based on clients ability to change and appeals to commitment to stop/reduce SU. Using

Contingency management

A

Small rewards like tokens, symbols or coins. Behavioral contract between clinician and client specifying desired behavior. Rewards are withheld if indivi fails to perform this behavior. Use of choirs to help feel satisfaction after failure.

Functional analysis

A

Gives insight to own behavior to make sure they learn.
one FA per substance
Determining function of use, risk situations and choose intervention on the basis of FA. Can also invite support person to also get insight into unconscious behavior

Motivational interviewing

A

Collaborative goal oriented conversation style with special attention to change language. It is designed to enhance personal motivation and commitment to a particular goal by eliciting and exploring a person’s reasons for change in an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.

Patient is asked for motives against change, values/norms and discrepancy between situation now and desired. Identifying main obstacles etc.

Sustain talk

A

Opposite of change talk “I would like to quit”. Eg ‘I’ve tried and I can’t”

Relapse/emergency measures

A

Prevent use, but also interrupt slipup or elapse. Complicated for clients (abstinence violation effect causes one slip up to fall back into relapse. goal is to view it as a part of a process instead of complete failure

Dealing with craving

A

Seeking distraction
Surfing the urge (accept craving, it will get less)
Alternative thoughts
Mindsurfing (positive cons. of not using)
Seek social support
Formulating helpful thoughts
Declining/refusing offered substance
