PBL 4: Flowers and Plant Reproduction Flashcards

1
Q

Sepals

A

outermost+lowermost appendage, modified leaves for protection
(all sepals together= calyx)

Q

Petals

A

above sepals, sits on receptacle, important for attracting pollinators (color, shape, scent, arrangement, size)

(all petals= corolla)
petals+sepals= perianth

Q

Carpels/Pistil

A

female reproductive organs (gynoecium)
1.) Stigma: catches pollen grain
2.) Style: stem-like structure to hold up stigma
3.) Ovary: produces megaspores

Q

Stamens

A

male reproductive organs
-above the petals
-all stamens together: androecium

1.) Filament: stalk/stem
2.) Anther: pollen production
-4 columns of tissue part of the sporophyte generation and produce microspores

Neighboring anther cells (tapetum) act as nurse cells for the microspore mother cells.

Q

Inflorescence

A

Indeterminate: no restrictive growth (flowers open at different times)
-Advantages:
–Timing of initiation
–Maturation of flwoers
–Longer blooming time

-Disadvantages:
–Resource intensive

Determinate: limited growth

16
Q

Types of asexual reproduction

A

-Layering: new roots by creating adventitious roots
-Grafting: attaching stem of one plant to a stem of another
-Bud-grafting: attaching bud of one plant to a stem of another
-Cutting: propagation of the same plant by catting at the node and letting it grow a new root system

17
Q

Adventitious root

A

A root that arises from any point OTHER than the radicle (embryonic point) or the root axis of a plant.

18
Q

Types of pollination

A

-wind pollination (dandelion)
-Animal pollination: attraction through symmetry
–Actinomorphic (Radial symmetry)
–Zygomorphic (one plane of symmetry)

-Cross-pollination: pollen arrives from a different plant: boosts genetic diversity
-Gravity
-Water pollination
