Lecture 14 Flashcards
Foraging using a variety of sensory modalities
Visual cues, chemical cues, search images.
Search Image
Distinctive visual features of an object, like a single prey type; facilitates ability to find cryptic prey
Kulahci, Dornhaus, & Papaj (2008): Is bumblebee foraging more efficient when multiple senses are used?
Trained the individual bees to forage on artificial flowers that varied in shape and odor. The flowers could provide single or multiple cues that bees learned to associate with rewards. (Shape, Scent, Shape and Scent)
The bees trained to use both visual and odor cues had the highest feeding performance.
Evidence supports Multiple sensory cues facilitates efficient feeding
Pietrewicz & Kamil (1977) and Pietrewicz & Kamil (1979): Blue jays using search image to find cryptic moths
Trained Blue Jays to search for images of moths on a computer screen. 10 positive, 1 for negative
One species was on birch, another on oak, and the birds were exposed to the same image repeatedly. When the two moths were interspersed and presented randomly, the jays could not create a search image
