muscle compartments- thigh overview Flashcards

1
Q

anterior compartment

A

Boundaries
* Deep Fascia (superficially)
* Medial Intermuscular Septum (posterior/medial)
* Lateral Intermuscular Septum (posterior/lateral)
* Shaft of femur (deep)

Common Action
Knee extension- consistent with nerve derived from posterior division of plexi

Common Innervation
Femoral Nerve

Common blood supply:
Profunda femoris and femoral artery)

Spaces:
* Femoral Triangle
* Adductor Canal

Muscles:
* Rectus Femoris
* Vastsus Lateralis
* Vastus Medialis
* Vastus Intermedius

Q

medial compartment

A

Medial compartment boundaries:
* Deep Fascia (superficially )
* Medial Intermuscular Septum (Anteriorly)
* Shaft of Femur (deep)

Common Action
Hip Abduction - consistent with nerve derived from anterior division of plexus

Innervation:
Obturator Nerve

Blood:
Profunda Femoris
(obturator superiorly)

Muscles
* Adductor Brevis
* Adductor Longus
* Adductor Magnus (adductor part)
* Gracilis

Q

posterior compartment

A

Posterior compartment
Boundaries:
Deep Fascia (superficially)
Lateral Intermuscular Septum (ant./lat.)
Linea aspera (deep)

Note* there is no structure forming a boundary between medial and posterior compartments: this is an arbitrary boundary between the hamstring and adductor components of Adductor Magnus

Common Action:
Knee Flexion- consistent with nerve derived from anterior division of plexus

Common innervation:
Tibial Nerve

Common blood supply:
Profunda Femoris Artery
(assisted by inferior gluteal)

Spaces:
- Politeal Fossa
Muscles:
* Biceps Femoris (SH+LH)
* Semimembranosus
* Semitendinosus
* Adductor Magnus (Hamstring part)
