Successes

A

Decolonisation, when the UN was founded 750 million people lived under a colonial power now only 2 million people live under colonial rule. The UNs human rights frame work include the right to sovereignty and self determination. General assembly passed many resolutions on decolonisation including the granted independence to colonial countries and people.
Human rights, defined human rights through the universal declaration of human rights and establishes mechanisms to protect and promote the right it outlines

Failures

A

cannot always effectively enforce mandates, security council can use military force and sanctions however these are often prevented by permanent council members as harsh measures are not wanted
Security council inaction a the permanent council members ultimately determine which conflicts constitute threats to international peace and often the council disagrees on how to resolve these conflicts
Western minded, predominantly European and American views prevail
