Ch 7 Quotes Flashcards

1
Q

“Like some disconsolate prisoner”

A

Simile - highlights the melancholy Jekyll experiences because of Hyde. The word “some” suggest Utterson’s view of him is reduced to a low status commoner. This contrasts with earlier in the text when he is referred to as a “respectable gentleman”. This evokes sympathy from the reader, as Jekyll is displayed as losing his internal battle to Hyde, and simultaneously he is losing his persona as a respectable gentleman. Moreover, “prisoner” connotes entrapment, suggesting Jekyll is a prisoner to Hyde. Evident when he unwillingly transforms to Hyde in regents park. This contradicts what he said in chapter 3 where he said “in any moment I choose I can be rid of Hyde”. Alternatively, it could be argued that Jekyll is a prisoner to society, as society has isolated him
