- national parks e.g. 1993 the blue + John crow mountains park was established (780km2) = supports thousands of trees, species, rare animals + insects —> further 6 sites identified for future protection
- entry fees to national parks pay for conservation

- marine parks e.g. first one established in 1992 in Montego Bay —> protected from overfishing, industrial pollution + mass tourism

- raft trips on the Rio grande river taken in small groups with significant time gaps between trips + rely solely on manpower

- efforts have been made to promote community tourism = more money filtering down to the local people
- the sustainable communities foundation programme has been active in central + south west Jamaica
- the Astra country Inn in Mandeville viewed as a pioneer hotel which has worked with surrounding communities
- work includes promotion of bed + breakfast accommodation in private homes, training local guides, developing community based tourist attractions + encouraging development of local suppliers

A
- in the 1970s the Jamaican govt introduced ‘jamaicanisation’ policies designed to attract FDI
- policies included comparatively high wages + special industry taxes that went directly into social development, healthcare + education
- tourism has encouraged the development of hard infrastructure as well e.g. cruise passenger terminals in 4 popular locations, private jet centre in Montego Bay, two international airports
- the revenue from tourism plays a vital part in allowing central + local govt fund economic + social policies

Describe the growth of Negril
A
- large beach resort on the west coast of Jamaica
- the improvement of the road between Montego Bay + negril in the 1970s increased its position as a new resort
- a small airport was built for North American winter tourists
- several hotels were built to cater specifically for European tourists

A
- the Negril Coral Reef preservation society was formed as an NGO in 1990 to address ongoing degradation of the coral reef
- the Negril Marine Park was established in 1998 = educate people on the fragility of coral reefs

Challenges ahead for Jamaica
A
- the behaviour of some tourists clashes with the islands traditional morals
- people have a negative view of Jamaica due to its levels of violent crime + harassment
- despite govt initiatives to protect the environment much valuable biodiversity has already been lost
- BUT Jamaica is one of the few Caribbean tourist destinations that had done relatively well during the recession that saw a decline in visitor arrivals
