Q

What are the elements of mucous membranes?

A
  1. Epithelium - varies depending on site and function.
  2. Lamina propria - underlying connective tissue to epithelium.

Alimentary tract (GI) contain a third component:
3. Muscularis mucosae.

Q

What does serous membrane consist of?

A
  1. Mesothelial cells - single flattened layer that is derived from mesoderm of coelomic cavity.

Q

How many layers are in serous membrane?

A

Two layers:
1. Visceral - lines the organ.
2. Parietal - lines the wall of the cavity.
These layers are continuous with each other.

Q

What happens with the two layers of serous membrane?

A

The layers are continuous with each other and they create a slit-like space and the membrane layers slide over each easily and are lubricated by lymph fluid.

Q

How tightly are each layers connected to the surrounding structures?

A
  1. Visceral - connected very tightly to the viscera (organs).
  2. Parietal - connected to the wall of the cavity by loose aerolar tissue (stripped away easily).
