1
Q

Q

Neurochemicals

A

Thought and behaviour depend on chemicals - neurotransmitters

EG - low levels of serotonin in OCD, high levels of dopamine in schizophrenia

Q

Genotype & Phenotype

A

Genotype - particular set of genes that a person possesses. Actual genetic makeup

Phenotype - characteristics of an individual determined by genes and the environment. The way genes are expressed through physical, behavioural and psychological behaviours

Despite having same genes, identical twins phenotype is different
EG PKU can be prevented by restricted diet
Shows behaviour depends on interaction between inherited factors (nature) and environmental factors (nurture)

A

Natural selection of genes based on survival value & reproductive success

More likely to survive = reproduce and pass on these traits

Q

Strengths

A
  • Real World Application
Understanding biochemical process with development psychoactive drugs
Treats mental disorders - antidepressants - inc serotonin levels
Means people with depression may be able to better manage conditions
  • Scientific Methods
Precise & objective methods - fMRI, EEGs
Means much of biological approach is based on objective and reliable data
