Q

What percentage of voters actually voted?

A

More Americans voted in 2020 than in any other presidential election in 120 years. About 67% of eligible voters cast ballots this year, but that still means a third did not. That amounts to about 80 million people who stayed home.

Q

What is the negative partisanship theory?

A

Utilizing parallelism, the theory of negative partisanship implies that voters do not need to identify with one party (i.e. the in-group) to feel aversion toward the opposing party (i.e. the out-group).

Q

What is ranked choice voting?

A

Ranked-choice voting is an electoral system in which voters rank candidates in order of preference, rather than simply selecting a single candidate. In a ranked-choice voting system, voters are able to rank as many candidates as they like, and if no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. The votes of those who chose the eliminated candidate as their first choice are then redistributed to their second-choice candidate, and this process continues until one candidate receives a majority of the votes. Ranked-choice voting is intended to ensure that the winning candidate has broad support from voters, and to eliminate the need for costly and time-consuming runoff elections. It is used in a number of jurisdictions around the world, including some cities in the United States.
