Vitality
Demographic, social and institutional strength of a language and its speakers
Diglossia
Situation where two languages are used in a speech community, each with distinct functional roles. Both are considered stable.
Code switching
The alternation between varieties, or codes, across sentences or clause boundaries. Often covers code mixing.
Domain
The social and physical setting of a speaker
Situational
A personalised view of the context of situation of language use.
Passive knowledge
The ability to understand, but not speak, a language.
Active knowledge
Knowledge of a linguistic variety that includes the ability to produce and use it
Speech levels
Replacement of vocabulary with sometimes radically different forms in the different styles associated with different social groups or castes
