Equilibrium Constant Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Equilibrium Constant (Kc)

A
  • used to show the relationship between the concentration of products and reactants at equilibrium
  • used to determine which direction a reaction will proceed to reach equilibrium

Kc = (products)^a / (reactants)^b

Q

What is favoured with EqC

A
  • if Kc > 10^4 –> eq. mixture contains a lot of products
  • if Kc < 10^4 –> eq. mixture contains a lot of reactants

Q

Change in temperature on Kc

A

Endothermic
- increase in temp –> decrease on Kc

Exothermic
- decrease in temp –> increase on Kc

Q

Reaction Quotient (Qc)

A
  • shows the relationship between the concentrations of products/reactants during any stage of reaction
  • calculated like Kc
  • if Q > K –> reverse reaction preferred until eq. reached –> favours reactants
  • if Q < K –> forward reaction preferred until eq. reached –> favours products
