Bio C1 Flashcards
What7 characteristics do all living organisms share? Define them. (All definitions of seven) MRSGREN
Movement: An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change in position or place
Respiration: Chemical process inside cells that break down nutrients to release energy for metabolism
Sensitivity: To be able to react to and detect changes in the internal or external environment
Growth: Permanent increase in cell number or dry mass or both
Reproduction: Making more of the same type of organism
Excretion: Taking out of wasted materials or materials in excess of development
Nutrition: Intake of food that releases nutrient molecules for energy, growth and development.
Why are viruses not living?
Viruses cannot perform movement and sensitivity by its own
Define species
A group of organisms that reproduce to produce fertile offspring
How can organisms that share recent common ancestors be identified?
Anatomy: By tracing similarities in internal body structures for example, bones
Morphology: By tracing similarities in external (observable) body structures
DNA: By tracing similarities in the DNA of organisms
What are the 5 kingdoms? What are their features, respectively?
Animal kingdom: multicellular, doesn’t have cell wall and chloroplast
Plant kingdom: multicellular, have cell wall and chloroplast
Fungi: multicellular or unicellular (yeast),
Describe the binomial naming system
An internationally agreed system that each organism’s scientific name is consisting of two parts: the Genus and the Species
State the features that all cells share
They all have cell membranes and own some sort of DNA/RNA
What is the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?
Vertebrates have backbones, invertebrates doesn’t have backbones
What are the 5 main groups of vertebrates? What’re their feature, respectively?
Fish: Scales all over their body, reproduce eggs with no shells
Amphibians: Smooth skin, reproduce eggs with no shells
Birds: Feathers with scales on their legs, reproduce eggs with shells
Reptiles: Smooth skin, reproduce eggs with shells
Mammals: Fur all over their body, reproduce directly
What is an arthropod? What are the 4 main groups of arthropods?
Arthropod (invertebrates): Animals that does not have backbones
Arthropods include insects, crustaceans, arachnids, myriapods
What are the two main groups of flowering plants?
Monocotyledons and dicotyledons
What is the difference between monocotyledons and dicotyledons
Monocotyledons: flower petals in multiples of three, leaf veins are parallel
Dicotyledons: flower petals in multiples of five, leaf veins are branched
Give an example of a non-flowering plant
Mango plant
