Hypothermia

A

unable to regulate temperature while anaesthetised

falls due to -
reduced shivering
vasodilation
reset thermoneutral point
open body cavity
cold gases
dry gases
wetting and prep

support -
bubble wrap, sock, heat pads, warm theatre
warm saline irrigation
warm water enema
circle systems - rebreathing warmer air

impacts increased pain, increased infections, delayed recovery

A

heat loss
extubation - only when can swallow
IV access - leave in canula for 1 hour

A

prolonged recovery -
hypothermia
excessive pre med
too deep
hypoglycemia
choice of inhalant
choice of induction agent

airway obstruction -
debris or gauze - esp dental
bodily fluids

agitated recovery -
inadequate premed or analgesic

BOAS

A

sedation
analgesia
caution with steroids
leave IV in
leave tube in until sat up
check for regurgitation before taking out tube
maintain in sternal recumbency
tracheostomy may be needed
reintubate is SPO2 consistently low, obvious effort or distress, cyanosis or paradoxical breathing
