Q

Causes of the revolt of the Northern Earls ( Mary Queen of Scots )

A

Many northern Lords saw Mary Queen of Scots as a promising alternative to Elizabeth for a number of reasons: they were unhappy with Elizabeth’s religious settlement and they believed that Mary, a devout Catholic, would allow them to worship freely again as Catholics.
Mary was being imprisoned in the North at the time.

Outcomes of the Northern rebellion

A

The Earls in the North were beheaded and replaced by Protestants who were loyal to Elizabeth. This therefore increased her power in the North.

Elizabeth looked weak as she did not execute the Duke of Norfolk and Mary
