Procedures as BAEO
- Obtain and set up BA board
- Don BA tabard
- Accept tally from each wearer
- Ensure time in is correct
- Check tally pressure is correct; calculate and record all details
- Ensure BA members names are correct
- Ensure team name is correct and tallies kept together on BA board
- Brief team leader, i.e. radio channel, callsign, work area, tasking
- Confirm BA team number, tasking and location information
- Conduct radio check before crew leaves BA entry point
- Maintain regular communications with BA teams
- Constantly monitor time and external conditions
- Update location, actions and pressure when applicable
- Liase with BAST
- Initiate emergency actions if required
- When teams return; record actual time out and hand back tally
and record details - Transfer details from BA board to BA log book
When may stage 2 boards be required?
- Scale of operations may be protracted
- Greater control and supervision is required
- More than 2 entry control points are necessary
- More than 12 users are in use at 1 time
- Long duration BA sets are being used
What is the primary role of BAST?
Rescue firefighters that have become trapped, lost, injured or reported missing.
What else can the BAST be called on for?
- Identify and notify staff of any hazards that may affect firefighter
safety - Assist firefighter in need
- maintain continuous assessment of operational risks
- Develop a plan to rescue firefighters
Where is the most effective place for a BAST to be positioned??
A location where they are available to BAEO and gather all info from IC, operations officer or sector commander prior to deployment
Consider path to entry points
Be able to see the whole incident for assessment
What level of PPE do the BAST need to be in?
Same level or above to the current team in operation
When will a BAST be deployed?
- Word back a FF is lost or trapped
- Receipt of a distress call
- Confirmed activated DSU
- Activation of duress for digital coms network (DCN)
- No reply or word back from BA teams
- Localized or total structural collapse
- Flashover, backdraft overwhelming BA teams
- At discretion of the IC
What are the responsibilities of BAST Crew leader? (4 person BAST)
- Verify radio channels
- Establish reporting protocols, with notification BAST is ready and sizing up
- Brief BAST crew on tasks and coordinate team
- Ensure appropriate level of PPE
- Assessment of operational risks and with briefing to direct supervisor
- Know location and status of BA teams
- Develop action plan to rescue FFs
- Lead BAST
- Brief crew on hazards
What are the responsibilities of BAST members?
- Ensure appropriate level of PPE is worn
- Assist in operational risk assessment
- Lay out tools
- Monitor relevant radio channels
- Assist in preparation of action plan
- Respond when required
- Ensure proper booking out procedures are adhered to.
What percent of air capacity is the minimum for a BA cylinder to be used for BA team donning?
80% or 240 bar
What is the minimum of team members in a BA team?
2 unless the FF is in line of site to the BAEO and operations are external
