Week 1 - Introduction Flashcards
Quantitative Studies
Collect numerical data
Qualitative Studies
Collect non-numerical data to answer research questions
Variable
Something that varies - takes on different values of categories
Categorical variables
Varies by type or kind (nominal measurement)
Continuous Variables
Varies by degree or amount (interval/ratio measurement)
Independent Variable
Presumed to cause changes in another variable - manipulated by the researcher
Dependent Variable
The presumed effect or outcome of the study - measured by the researcher
Extraneous Variable
Variables that competes with the IV in explaining the outcome or DV
Confounding Variable
An extraneous variable that co-varies with the levels of the
IV
Mediating/Intervening Variable
Occurs between two other variables in a causal chain
Moderating Variable
Qualify a causal relationship as dependent on another variable
Causation
A condition in which one event generates another event
An experiment should be?
- Carefully designed
- Rigorously controlled
- Replicable
- Ethical
Important ethical issues
- Informed consent
- Right to confidentiality
- Right to withdraw
- Do not cause physical or mental harm/distress
Disadvantages of Experimental Approach
- Does not test the effects of nonmanipulated variables
- Artificiality or Generalizability
