Vocabulary Flashcards
Limiting reactant
reactant that is completely used when the chemical reaction is completed.
Excess reactant
the substance not used completely in a reaction.
Theoretical yield
the maximum amount of product that can be produced from a given reactant. (Done by calculation)
Actual yield
the measured amount of that product obtained from a reaction. (will be given)
Percentage yield
the ratio of the actual yield to the theoretical yield, multiplied by 100.
Soluble
able to be dissolved, especially in water.
Solution
a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
Solvent
is the dissolving medium in a solution
Solute
the substance dissolved in a solution
Suspension
if particles in a solvent are large, they settle, it’s a suspension
Colloids
particles intermediate in size between those of a solution and suspension; particles in a colloid are small enough to be suspended throughout the solvent. Ex. Mayonnaise, milk, gelatin, smoke.
Tyndall effect
occurs when light is scattered by colloidal particles dispersed in a transparent medium.
Emulsion
a mixture of two or more liquids that are normally immiscible
Electrolyte
is a substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts an electric current. Ex. table salt (NaCl) when dissolved in water (H2O) gives [Na+ and Cl]
Nonelectrolyte
is a substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that does not conduct an electric current. Ex. sugar and water, no ions are free to move (no conducting electricity)
