~다가 can be used to show that one action occurs after another
when the verb before it is in present tense, it implies the action was halted or cut short
can be translated as while

A

학생은 열심히 공부하다가 잠이 들었어요 - the student studied hard and then fell asleep (was studying but studying was halted because they fell asleep)
