Q

Stretch receptors

A
  • aka muscle spindles
  • detect stretch in muscles
  • sends info to brain then back to muscles telling them to contract!
  • makes sure muscle doesn’t overstretch

Q

Golgi tendon organ

A
  • senses tendon stretch
  • causes muscle inhibition so less likely to tear
  • autogenic inhibition = to relax
  • activated when there is tension in the muscle

Q

How does PNF stretching increase flexibility?

A

Golgi tendon organ tricks and overpowers the stretch receptors causing autogenic inhibition allowing you to stretch muscles further

Q

Autogenic inhibition

A

When there is a sudden relaxation of the muscle in response to high tension
The receptors involved in this process are Golgi tendon organs
