- oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis
- usually P450 enzymes (some exceptions)

Phase II reactions:
- conjugation
- Glucuronyl, acetyl, methyl, sulphate and other groups are typically involved

A

=> larger oral doses needed than if given by other routes

*due to saturation of the metabolic process
