What is social economic status (SES)?
A group op people with similar occupational, eductional, and economic characteristics
What is ethnicity?
A dimension of culture based on cultural heritage, nationality, race, religion, and language
What is culture?
The behaviour, patterns, beliefs, and all other products of a particular group of people that are passed on from generation to generation
What are characteristics of a high SES neighborhood?
- less physcial punishment and more conversatoins
- better environment overall
- high rates of substance abuse
- more home atmoshpere
What are characteristics of a low SES neighborhood?
- authoritarian parenting –> hard to convince to change parenting styles due to tradition, religion etc so inform them and don’t tell them directly what to do
- lower quality of education
- more mental health problems
- more delinquency
What are schools in low income areas characterized by?
- lot of young teachers –> less experience
- rogue learning method
What is the immigrant risk model?
lower well-being, more at risk
What is the immigrant paradox model?
the youth of immigrant parents is higher in well-being than non immigrant youth
What is a jigsaw classroom?
A classroom were students from different cultural backgrounds are placed in cooperative groups where they are required to construct different parts of a project to reach a common goal
What is individualism?
= priortising individual goals over collective goals

= prioritising values that preserve the group

* respect and obedience
