Static Electricity Flashcards
3 ways to charge a NEUTRAL object?
- Friction
- Contact
- Induction
What is charging by friction?
- Two different NEUTRAL objects are rubbed together
- ELECTRONS are transferred from one object to another
What’s charging by contact?
The charge on a neutral object becomes the same charge on the charged object
(2 different objects with different amounts of charge come in contact with each other)
Example: 1 is neutral and 1 is charged
What is an example of contact?
A NEGATIVELY charged rod touches a neutral object, the neutral object will become negatively charged and vice versa
What is static electricity?
The charge build up on an object (electric potential) some objects hold on to electrons better than others.
When do static charges build up?
When ELECTRONS move into or out of an object leaving it with a different balance of protons (positive charge) and electrons (negative charge)
What does it mean when an object has extra electrons?
Object is NEGATIVELY charged
When an object has fewer protons?
Object is POSITIVELY charged
Do protons move?
NO
Does static electricity move?
Does NOT move
