Q

What are the IFR taxi checks? How is it performed?

A

By turning back and forth and watching the instruments.

Airspeed Indicator - 0
Attitude Indicator - level (no more than a few degrees)
Turn Coordinator - shows turn in same direction as the plane is turning, ball to outside of the turn
Heading Indicator - shows turn in same direction
VSI - 0

Clock - test minute and second function to ensure they are working.

Q

What indication is there that only the front of the pitot tube is iced up?

What indication is there that both ports on the pitot tube are iced up?

A

ASI shows zero. Basically two static ports (because of drain port on pitot). Altimeter and VSI show correct indications.

If both ports on the pitot are blocked, the ASI will drop as you descend and increase as you climb - acts like an altimeter.

Q

What indication is there that only the static port(s) are iced up?

A

ASI increases with a descent and increases with a climb - acts like altimeter. Altimeter and VSI do not change. Can open up alternative static course or break glass to VSI.
