Q

Lidia Thorpe tells Pauline Hanson to ‘f*** off’ after bombshell speech in Senate
–> June 2023

‘fuck off pauline’

A

Language represents a powerful conveying of personal beliefs and identity, hence, when emotions are large, it is fitting language choices would reflect this.

‘I had to withdraw them [the remarks]’
–> reflects the situations when informal language, expletives are deemed inappropriate and unacceptable

I believe that expletives should not be so condemned, even in formal contexts, for their capacity to convey emotional positions and beliefs.

whereas discriminatory lang is becoming worse e.g ‘faot’ ‘Nga’ ‘po*f’

A

Words like the c-bomb and ‘f*ck) serve important identity functions, signalling social solidarity and building rapport.
However, discriminatory language, whose meanings are deteriaating, are deemed inappropriate in almost all social contexts.

‘today’s offensive language singles out its victims’

Swearing which aims to convey identity and often build rapport should not be condemned for this, however, language which singles out individuals and discriminates should be challenged for this.
