Able to obliterate, stamp out, or pull out from the roots.
Chris eradicated his family by going out into the wilderness and cutting all contact with them.
Actualize (Verb)
To make actual or real; turn into action or fact.
Many people try to actualize their dream of becoming Broadway stars by moving to New York City to perform.
Existentialism (Noun)
A philosophical attitude that is opposed to rationalism and empiricism, stressing the individual’s unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for the authenticity of his or her choices.
Hierarchy (Noun)
Any system of persons or things ranked one above another.
Most societies have a social hierarchy based on wealth.
Diction (Noun)
The choice of words used in a literary work.
Tone (Noun)
The writer’s attitude toward the material and/or readers. Tone may be playful, formal, serious, angry, ironic, etc.
Mood (Noun)
The atmosphere or feeling created by a literary work, partly by a description of the objects or by the style of the descriptions.
Form (Noun)
The physical structure of the poem: the length of the lines, their rhythms, their system of rhymes and repetition.
Meter (Noun)
A regular pattern of unstressed and stressed syllables in a line or lines of poetry.
Rhyme Scheme (Noun)
Pattern of rhyme indicated by lowercase letters.

Allegory (Noun)
The depiction of abstract ideas through the use of characters and events, a symbolical narrative.
Albatross (Noun)
A type of great, white sea bird native to the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere. Since the publication of “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” its meaning also has come to mean a constant worrisome burden or an obstacle to success.
Synecdoche (Noun)
A literary device in which part of an object symbolizes the whole.
Ex: “The concert costs five dollars a head,” “head” signifying “person.”
Ballad (Noun)
A simple narrative poem of folk origin, composed in short stanzas and adapted for singing.
Inure (Verb)
To accustom to hardship, difficulty, pain, etc.; toughen or harden; habituate.
Most people inure over time to the pain they feel when a loved one passes away.
