‘Anchor. Kite’
- She’s stabilising his influence and keeping him grounded, since an anchor keeps a secure boat and stabilises it
- as on a symbolical level, an anchor is a symbol of strength, which sailors were fond of, because this token has a link to strength.
- And when an anchor was put down, it was also representative of a safe journey- perhaps it suggests the speaker will gain stability and security, from moving out.

- I= alternatively, the metaphorical comparison of the mother to an anchor, can also suggest she restricts his freedom.
- A kite has connotations of freedom but a kite also needs someone to hold and anchor it, just like the speaker still needs someone to hold and anchor him- suggesting that he still needs her emotionally and cannot completely be let go.
- and the imagery of an anchor and a kite implies the mother is preventing the son from flying away. (and gaining independence).

I= ; it could perhaps be reflective of how the mother is what keeps the speaker steady, so he doesn’t lose control- she also restricts him from fully/completely leaving.
I= but on the other hand, this could suggest the speaker desires to be free from his mother, yet she cannot let go- connecting to the idea of innocence, that a child has.

- I= this is connected to the ‘anchor’ that his mother is, because the the speaker’s mother might be the ship which the astronauts are attached to.
