Lesson 12: Types of Data Flashcards
What is meant by quantitative data?
Numerical data that can be statistically analysed
What are the FOUR things QUANTITATIVE data includes?
-The DEPENDENT variable in an experiment
-CLOSED QUESTIONS in questionaires
-STRUCTURED interviews
-A tally of how many times a behavioural category is seen in an observation
What is meant by Qualitative data?
Data involving words and the data is based on the subjective interpretation of lanuage
What are the THREE things Qualitative data
- OPEN questions in questionaires
- A transcript from an UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEW
- Researchers describing what they see in an observation
Why is qualitative data challenging to analyse?
-It relies on interpretation by the researcher which could be INNACURATE, SUBJECTIVE OR BIASED
-Qualitative data is difficult to categorise
What is Primary data?
Data that is collected directly by the researcher for the purpose of the investigation
What is Secondary data?
Information that was collected for a purpose other than the current use.
What is one issue with secondary data?
There is variation in the quality and accuracy of secondary data, making it hard for researchers to know how reliable secondary data is.
What is a meta-analysis?
The process of combining results from a number of studies on a particular topic to provide an overall view.
What is an advantage a meta-analysis?
-Allows individuals to view data with a lot more confidence
-Results can be generalised across much larger populations
What is a disadvantage of a meta-analysis?
-May be prone to publication bias ; the researcher may choose to leave out studies with negative or non-significant results.
