What is informed consent?
Making participants aware of the aims and purposes of a study, so that they can agree to take part in the full knowledge of what the research is about and what they are letting themselves in for
Under what condition is informed consent not possible to gain?
If DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS could arise
What is protection from harm?
The responsibility to protect participants from physical and psychological harm during the study.
What is Right to Withdraw?
The idea that all participants must be aware that they can leave the study at anytime, regardless or whether payment or inducement has been offered
What is confidentiality?
The ethical code surrounding the idea that participant data is confidential and should not be disclosed to anyone unless it has been agreed in advance
What is the difference between confidentiality and anonymity
Confidentiality means that data can be traced back to a name
Anonymity means that data CAN NOT be traced back to a name
What is Avoid deception?
The ethical code that follows the idea that witholding information or misleading participants is unacceptable
What is a cost-benefit analysis?
When the potential harm of doing research is weighed against the potential gains.
What is debriefing?
The process of giving participants an explanation and aim of the study, after it has been conducted.
