Tips: * Sun sensitivity
* Take with food -upset stomach
* Do not take anything containing Ca++, Fe++, Mg++, Zn++, 2 hrs before or after
* though unlikely may decrease effectiveness of oral contraceptives (OC) use additional bc during and 1 week after last dose.
Amoxicillin

Tips:
* Do not take vitamins or medication containing ZN++ for at least 3 hours after taking cephalexin

•Z-pak: 2 250mg tablets on day 1 then one tablet days 2-5

Tips:
• Dont take w/ Al++ or MG++ containing antacid
• Qtc prolongation occurs rarely, but possible interactions with many different medications.
• Contraindicated if macrolide allergy.
Ciprofloxacin

Tips:
* QTc prolongation occurs rarely, but possible interaction with many different medications
* dont take food/medications containing Ca++, Fe++ withing 2 hrs before or after ciprofloxacin
* sun sensitivity: use sunscreens avoid tanning beds
* may incresae caffine sensitivity
* contraindicated if fluoroquinonlone allergy
sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim

Nitrofurantoin

* Orange or brown urine is expected and not cause for concern
* Do not take food or medications containing Mg++ 2 hrs before or after nitrofurantoin
* take with food/milk to inc absorption
Metronidazole

Tips:
* contraindicated with alcholol during therapy and 3 days following last dose
*metallic taste in mouth

PRODUCTS CONTAINING ETHINYL ESTRADIOL:
*Inc cardiovascular risk (DVT,PE, MI). not recommended for those +35 years old, smoker, or history of stroke/blood clots.
TIPS:
* if oc not started day 1 of menses, use additonal non-drug form of contraception first week of therapy.
* take some time each day for maximum effectiveness
* some anti-convulsants may dec effectivenss of hormonal contraceptives or inc chance of seizures.

* one active tablet daily for 24 days, then one inactive tablet for 4 days.
Treats:
* acne
* premenstrual dysphoric disorder
Claime to fame:
*only 4 inactive days= shorter menstrual periods.
Tips:
* drospirenone lessens the water retention/weight gain side effects of estrogen.
norelgestromin
Brand Name:
* Xulane
Frequency:
* apply one new patch each week 3 weeks then week 4 is patch free
Treats:
* Contraception
Tips:
* Same side effect profile as oral contraceptives but more common
* adhesive may cause skin rash/rotate sites
* do not cut patch
* apply to butt, upper torso, stomach or upper arm.
Etonogestrel/ ethinyl estradiol

* NuvaRing
Frequency:
* insert one ring into vagina on or before 5 of cycle and leave in for 3 weeks, then remove on week 4 discard.
Treats:
* contraceptive
Tips:
* If ring falls out, rinse with cool water and re-insert within 3 hrs
* don’t remove for intercourse
* ring is drug delivery device; not a barrier
medroxyprogesterone

* Depo-Provera
Frequency:
* 150 mg deep intramuscular injection in gluteal or deltoid muscle every 3 months
Treats:
* contraception
* Endometriosis pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, amenorrhea
Claime to fame:
* no estrogen
Tips:
* nervousness
* administration by healthcare professional
* don’t use >2 years due to potential bone loss
* Spotting or absent menses may result.
Levonorgestrel (OTC)

* Plan B One-Step Econtra One-Step
Frequency:
* take 1 tablet PO as soon as possible within 72 hours of unprotected sex
Treats:
*emergency post-coital contraception
Tips:
* Fatigue
* No evidence of interaction with antibiotics
* will not terminate an existing pregnancy.
