Anatomy: brain - meninges (dural septa and sinuses) Flashcards

1
Q

DURAL SEPTA
What are they?

A

Where the periosteal dura separates from the meningeal dura; and the meningeal dura forms a fold (usually double, sometimes single)
(Eg. falx cerebri in this picture)

Q

DURAL SEPTA
Falx cerebri
- Double or single layer of meningeal dura?
- Where does it lie?
- What are its attachments (anterior, posterior, superior?)
- What is it continuous with?

A

Double layer of meningeal dura

Within the longitudinal fissure, between the two cerebral hemispheres

Anterior: crista galli; posteriorly: internal occipital protuberance; superiorly: internal sagittal suture

Falx cerebelli

Q

DURAL SEPTA
Falx cerebelli
- Is it a single or double layer?
- Where does it lie?
- What is it continuous with?

A

Double layer of meningeal dura
Lies in the midline between the two cerebellar hemispheres
The falx cerebri

Q

DURAL SEPTA
Tentorium cerebelli
- Is it a single or double layer?
- Where does it lie?
- What are its attachments?
- What is its opening? What does this house?

A

Double layer of meningeal dura

In the transverse fissure (between the occipital lobes and cerebellum)

Anterior: clinoid processes (sphenoid), lateral: petrous portion of temporal bone; posteriorly: occipital bone

The tentorial notch/fissure; the midbrain

Q

DURAL SEPTA
Diaphragm sella
- Is it a single or double layer?
- What does it cover?
- It has an opening within it - what does this enable the passage of?

A

Single layer of dura
The sella turcica
The infundibulum of the pituitary

Q

DURAL SINUSES
What are they?

A

Spaces between the periosteal and meningeal dura, where venous blood collects.
